Goulburn Produce & Rural Supplies
Goulburn Produce & Rural Supplies opened its doors on the 3rd February 1983 in the old PDS store in Craig St Goulburn . PDS was a distributor of stock feeds, dog food, small goods and cigarettes and was taken over by the Wright Heaton company who in turn were swallowed up by the Adelaide Steamship group and therefore had no interest in a small feed distribution store in Goulburn. GPRS commenced selling dog food, stock feeds and fencing materials, but after the drought of the early eighties broke midway through 1983, the new owners could see an opportunity in the rural merchandise market. The old store was remodeled to accommodate animal health and veterinary supplies and from there the growth was enormous. The Maas family have been on the land in the area since 1963 and have a vast knowledge of farming and grazing, which enabled them to give excellent advice to their growing customer base, especially the hobby farmer set who had just begun to discover the Goulburn district and its proximity to Sydney. By 1988 we had outgrown the Craig St premises and were desperately looking for a suitable site close to the city centre. We approached the State Rail Authority to purchase the old Perway Workshops in Sloane St. This 4800 square mtr site consisting of some old run down buildings constructed in 1882 was used for the building of the famous rail trikes. The site was purchased at public auction and the massive task of cleaning and renovating began in October of 1988. The new store opened in March 1989. The internals of the building has just undergone another facelift, 23 years later, becoming part of the hardware chain Mitre 10. Still going strong after 30 years in Goulburn, Goulburn Produce and Rural Supplies Mitre 10 are your one stop hardware, building and rural shop with helpful experienced staff and a great shopping experience.
